#SustainabilityIsUs

We share with you our fight against Zero Hunger, featuring Teboho Makhabane, Head of ESG and Impact Investing at Sanlam Investments.

“The number of people across the globe who suffer from hunger has been steadily rising since 2015. Current estimates show that just under 700 million people suffer from acute hunger and starvation, which is about 8.9% of the world population. Locally here in South Africa, one in ten people goes hungry every day. Worse, we’re nowhere near on track to achieving our Zero Hunger target by 2030. And that’s a fact.”

As the collective staff here at Sanlam Investments, this is our story about the fight against hunger, to promote SDG 2. Every year the staff at Sanlam Investments rally together to show our support for SDG 2 (Zero hunger) by starting several initiatives to help relieve starvation amongst school children.

Sustainability really is at the heart of our purpose and part of our DNA.

Explore our staff initiatives

We've started seven staff-led initiatives which includes our very own vegetable garden planted on the rooftop of our Sanlam Investments building, and a number of vegetable gardens planted at struggling primary schools fairly close by to us in Pampoenkraal, Durbanville, Genadendal and Gardens in town. Just from our vegetable gardens alone we’ve been able to feed 1000 children a day, addressing some of our most pressing community needs. And lastly, we have a canned foods initiative for a charity of our choice in Gugulethu, where all our staff have been collecting hundreds of canned food and dry food products at our offices in Tygervalley.

Every year on Mandela Day, we plan special initiatives with select schools in underserved communities such as sandwich making and clothing and toy collections. This includes a community outreach for homeless children in Aurora.

Good Hope Seminary Junior School

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger, the Sanlam Investments staff partnered with the Good Hope Seminary Junior School in Gardens, giving their time and effort towards sowing the seeds of hope and change, for the school, the kids and the community. This beautiful vegetable garden at the school can produce more than 20kg of lush spinach and other healthy vegetables on a weekly basis. This fresh produce goes towards feeding the children and generating some extra income for the school.

Voorstekraal Skills Development Centre - Genadendal

This is our story about the fight against hunger to promote Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger at the Voorstekraal Skills Development Centre in Genadendal.

Inspired by the story of impoverished emerging farmers in Genadendal, we used staff donations from our Ubuntu Cares staff initiative at the Sanlam Investment Group to support their Talent Exchange Shop, an innovative project that empowers community members to exchange their skills for essential goods.

Aurora Community Centre Velddrif

Did you know that in South Africa, one in ten people go hungry every day? This is our story about the fight against hunger, to help promote SDG 2 – Zero Hunger.

The staff at Sanlam Investments got together on Mandela Day to support this poverty-struck community, the Aurora Community Centre near Velddrif. We prepared and served meals for the children, dropped off extra canned foods, handed over generous staff-donated funds as well as clothing and toys to make a difference in these little children’s lives. We also played games with them and painted their faces to add to the festive spirit of the day!
