Who We Are

Sanlam FOUR1 is a boutique asset manager, founded in 2006 and currently manages US$7.4bn2. Our focus is on surpassing clients’ expectations for investment objectives, operational efficiency and service.

Our teams consist of high calibre investment professionals with proven experience in their respective fields. We align our teams’ interests with those of our clients through direct equity ownership in their own business. The investment teams at Sanlam FOUR are passionate about how they invest to best achieve clients’ objectives. For this reason, they execute their investment philosophies and processes autonomously.

To support the work of our investment professionals, we have outstanding operations people and systems, and have a Client Service function that strives to stand out against our peers. This ensures that fund managers can focus on delivering their investment proposition.

We are majority owned by the Sanlam Group which is a substantial financial services company with a market capitalisation of US$9.3bn3 and a Fitch credit rating of AA-4. Sanlam FOUR is the Group’s international Centre of Excellence for asset management.

Tom Carroll

Senior UK Fund Manager

Tom Carroll is a Founding Partner and a senior UK equity fund manager. Prior to co-founding FOUR, he was with Schroder Investment Management Limited since April 2000. He was a member of the Specialist UK Equity Team, running high performance mandates and was an Executive Director, with direct responsibility for managing over £2Billion in retail and Institutional assets. Previously, Tom was a UK equity fund manager at M&G, which he joined in 1993. While there, he was part of a small team which established and built a Pension Fund business catering for clients with high return expectations. Tom qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) in London. In his time there, he worked in Corporate Finance and the financial services division. Tom also has a Business Degree and is qualified as an associate of the UK Society of Investment Professionals.

Derrick Dunne is a Founding Partner and the Chief Executive. Prior to co-founding Sanlam FOUR he was Co-Chief Executive of the multi-manager firm MM Asset Management Limited from 2000 to 2005. There he was responsible for all aspects of the business including strategy, sales and the investment process. Previously Derrick enjoyed an extensive career in investment manager research and evaluation working with such firms as Russell, Stamford Associates and Mercer Investment Consulting. He has also been a Director of the Association for Institutional Multi-Manager Investing (AIMMI). Derrick holds the UKSIP Investment Management Certificate.

Head: Fund Solutions

Within Sanlam FOUR and its subsidiary Sanlam International Investments (SIIL) Justin is Head: Fund Solutions. He joined the Sanlam Group in January 2001. Since 2009 Justin has worked for SIIL on a number of Sanlam Asset Management (Ireland) (SAMI) funds to which SIIL has been appointed. Justin's role involves the day-to-day management and monitoring of certain of SAMI’s funds, and the successful execution of SIIL’s investment strategy. Justin’s role includes making investment decisions relating to asset allocation, investment manager allocation and managing day-to-day cash flows. Justin is also heavily involved in decisions related to investment manager appointments and terminations, and the subsequent implementation of restructurings of the relevant SAMI fund(s). Justin is a senior member of the SIIL investment team.

Prior to the end of 2008 Justin worked for Sanlam Multi-Manager International (SMMI) in London and was responsible for a range of both global and regional equity and fixed income funds. His principal area of expertise within the investment team centered on the fundamental investment manager research and fund construction processes. His primary responsibilities were monitoring and managing SAMI’s Global Equity, UK Equity and historically SAMI's Global Bond Fund. Prior to working at SMMI, Justin studied at Durham University where he completed a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics and a M.Sc. in Finance. Justin is a CFA charterholder, a member of CFA Institute and a member of the CFA Society of the UK. He also holds the Investment Management Certificate qualification.

Robert Roux

Robert Roux is the Chief Operating Officer of Sanlam Investment Management (SIM). He has a wide range of responsibilities which include functional areas such as finance, risk, legal and compliance. SIM is one of South Africa’s biggest investment managers and offers client-focused investment solutions to individuals, intermediaries and larger institutional investors. With more than 24 years industry experience, he has gained extensive knowledge of local and international markets and the asset management industry. Prior to his current role, he was at Gensec Asset Management where he was responsible for management information, IT and procedures and controls in the investment process. He holds a B Compt (Honours) degree from the University of South Africa.

Johan van der Merwe

Johan completed his B Com (Honours) degree in accounting from the University of Pretoria in 1987. He began working at Deloitte and Touche and also lectured Accounting and Auditing at the University of Pretoria. He passed his qualifying examination for the Public Accountants' and Auditors' Board the following year. He completed his M.Com (Tax) at the University of Pretoria in 1990 and his M.Phil Finance at Cambridge in 1991.

Following this, he moved to Gencor’s Corporate Finance division, and was one of the core team members who helped to finalise the Billiton transaction. After its completion he became responsible for Corporate Finance and Tax at Billiton. He joined Investec Asset Management in 1997 as Sector Head of SA Resources, became Head of Equities in 1999 and was promoted to Global Sector Head of Resources in April 2000.

He was assigned responsibility for the Botswana Office and for Private Equity, and was a director and executive committee member of Investec Asset Management. In July 2002, he joined Sanlam Investment Management as CEO. In May 2003 Johan was appointed CEO of the Investment Cluster responsible for all the Investment businesses in the Sanlam Group. From the beginning of 2007 he became Head of the Institutional Cluster with fifteen businesses reporting to him.

Lukas Van Der Walt

Lukas graduated with an Honours Degree in Accounting in 1983. He subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985. In April 2008 Lukas was appointed Chief Executive of Sanlam-UK Limited to oversee the group’s growing portfolio of financial services businesses in the United Kingdom, currently active in distribution, product packaging, administration and asset management services. In March 2004, Lukas was appointed Chief Executive of Merchant Investors Assurance Company, having been part of the Sanlam team involved in the purchase of the Bristol-based company for the Sanlam Group. Prior to this, Lukas held several key posts with Sanlam at its Cape Town head-quarters between 1999 and 2004 including Head of Corporate Finance for Sanlam Limited, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer for Sanlam International and Head of Business Development for Sanlam Limited. Before joining Sanlam Lukas worked for Billiton Aluminium in The Hague, where the positions he held included Head of Human Resources & Commercial Affairs and Divisional Finance Director. A spell as Corporate Finance Manager at Gencor, based in Johannesburg and London, preceded this.

Jeremy Gibson

Jeremy joined Sanlam UK in September 2012 and was subsequently appointed to the boards of Sanlam UK, Sanlam Investments and Pensions and Sanlam Wealth Planning as Finance director. In addition, Jeremy is a non-executive director of Nucleus Financial Group, where he is chairman of the audit committee.

A chartered accountant, Jeremy qualified in South Africa before moving to the UK in 1996 and has since worked in a broad range of financial services organisations including stockbroking, investment banking, mortgage lending, advisory services and Life and Pensions in London and Sydney before settling in Bristol with his wife and two young daughters in 2008.

Valerie Evans

Head of Operations and Compliance

Valerie Evans is Head of Operations at Sanlam FOUR.

Prior to joining, she was Manager, Investment Operations for Integrated Alternative Investments. There, Valerie was responsible for fund structures, administration and performance analysis. She was also responsible for maintaining relationships with custodians, leverage providers and third party administrators.

Previously, Valerie was employed by UBS as an equity trader on large and small cap equities for all major and emerging markets. Prior to this, she was Assistant Manager, Fund Operations and Equity Trading at Quaestor. Valerie began her career with Lloyds where she held a number of administrative positions over a nine year period. Valerie holds the UKSIP Investment Management Certificate.

Adrian Jackson

Client Service & Sales

Adrian joined Sanlam FOUR in July 2014 to lead its client service and sales team. Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR he worked at Record Currency Management as a Director on the client team servicing clients and developing new business in the UK and Canada.

Adrian has spent most of his career at Russell Investments joining the quantitative services team in 1989 and subsequently moving in to the consulting group. Over time he fulfilled a variety of roles including starting the Commission Recapture business in Europe (eventually leading its development in all markets outside North America), head of institutional sales for EMEA, deputy head of the institutional business (which included asset management, investment consulting and implementation services) and latterly Chief Executive Officer of Russell Implementation Services Limited.

In 1997 Adrian worked for Lynch, Jones & Ryan, Inc., a NYSE broker-dealer, for one year. He began his career with CL-Laing & Cruickshank in 1987, becoming a registered representative of the London Stock Exchange before leaving the firm in 1989.

Development

Angus Scrace is responsible for institutional business development at Sanlam FOUR. Prior to joining he was responsible for consultant relations and business development for Macquarie Investment Management in the UK. Prior to this he was Head of Global Consultant Relations at Threadneedle Investments. Angus joined the industry in 1996 where he worked for Fidelity International (Fidelity Pensions Management) in the institutional business. Angus is Investment Management Certificate qualified and is a member of the CFA UK Society. He holds a B.Com and CTA from Cape Town University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Paul Zoltowski

Business Development

Paul Zoltowski joins Sanlam FOUR with 20 years’ client experience in financial services. 17 of these years have been spent as a client relationship manager in private banking with Coutts, Merrill Lynch and more recently 10 years at Credit Suisse where he was a senior client relationship manager. His clients have included business owners, trust funds, companies and pension fund. Paul holds a Business (Hons.) Degree and is qualified to Dip Pfs.

Senior Client Fund Manager

Rick began his financial services career as a graduate trainee financial adviser with Buckles Investment Services after serving for five years as a Warfare Officer in the Royal Navy.

With a special interest in portfolio management and client risk-profiling techniques, he began developing Buckles’ advisory investment offering in 2007. Rick was recruited by Sanlam UK in 2010 to help IFA partners improve their own investment processes. He has designed a number of innovative risk-profiling tools and portfolio management solutions which are used by hundreds of financial planners in the UK and abroad, both inside and outside Sanlam. He is passionate about the importance of ‘goal-based’ financial planning both to individuals and for the financial services market in the future. Rick moved to Sanlam FOUR in 2015, expanding his role working with Sanlam UK and its partners to include the full suite of risk-targeted portfolios and direct investment funds offered by Sanlam FOUR.

A regular public speaker, commentator and writer on financial topics, Rick also supports the PR side of Sanlam in the UK.
Rick holds a B.A. (Hons.), CFA Charter, Investment Management Certificate and Diploma in Financial Planning (DipPFS).

Reporting Associate

Paris is the firm’s Reporting Associate. Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR, Paris spent over two years at Fidelity Worldwide Investments working in the Customer Experience department. Paris holds a BA Hons. in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from University of Hull. She also holds the Investment Operations Certificate as well as the Investment Management Certificate and is currently a 2015 Level I candidate in the CFA Program.

James Knowles

Performance Analyst

James is the performance analyst at Sanlam FOUR.

He is responsible for all performance calculations relating to a variety of Sanlam Funds. In addition, he covers the performance reporting for all the Accel, P2 and Intrinsic models. James also has responsibility for performance attribution which is primarily equity focused. A significant part of James role is taken up with month end reporting. This involves not only performance and attribution mentioned above but also generating the raw data to populate factsheets and customised reports. James also has some involvement with system design as used by the rest of the Fund Solutions team.

Before joining Sanlam International Investments in April 2011, James worked for Russell Investments focusing on performance measurement, attribution and risk. Prior to this, James was the performance analyst at Sanlam Multi-Manager International. James attended Keele University studying Business Studies and French. James holds the ASIP qualification as well as the Investment Management Certificate (IMC).

Carl Fischer

Finance Manager

Prior to Sanlam FOUR, Carl was an investment operations analyst for Sanlam International Investments (“SII”). At SII Carl‘s responsibilities included group financial reporting, investment operations, fund management and compliance.

Prior to joining SII Carl was Head of Finance of CCL Label South Africa, the South African subsidiary of a global speciality packaging company CCL Industries Inc. Carl began his career at Tenk Loubser and Associates, an audit firm in Cape Town.

Carl is a Chartered Accountant registered with the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants.

Nora Stiebel

Portfolio Compliance & Risk

Nora is currently on maternity leave and Kirn Bhudiya will be temporarily taking on her duties.

Nora Stiebel works in Portfolio Compliance & Risk for the firm.

Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR, Nora worked at AIS Fund Administration as an Associate. Nora holds a Masters in Finance from the University of Linköping and the UKSIP Investment Management Certificate.

Operations Manager

Sarah works in Fund Operations for the firm. Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR, Sarah worked at Blackrock as a Settlements Associate. Previously Sarah has worked with TCI hedge fund as an Operations Specialist, and at Schroder Investment Management Limited in the fund accountancy department.

Karmen Klaup

Fund Operations Assistant

Karmen works in Fund Operations for the firm. Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR, Karmen worked at AllianceBernstein Investment Management as a Finance / Administrative Assistant. Previously Karmen worked at Meridian Global Services as a VAT Auditor. Karmen holds a BA in Protection and Management of Natural Resources from the Estonia University of Life Science.

Cecilia Ajayi

Team Assistant

Cecilia is the firm’s receptionist / PA and assists with the running of the office. Cecelia holds a Masters in Design Textiles with Business from the University of Brighton.
