The Sanlam Challenge was launched earlier this year with an exciting match between Saracens, sponsored by Sanlam Private Wealth UK, and the Sharks. At a wet and windy Allianz Park, Saracens clinched the Sanlam Private Wealth Shield by trouncing the Sharks 23-15.
“We are delighted to support what promises to be full-blooded clashes between Saracens and the Blue Bulls and Western Province. The teams have committed to fielding their strongest possible sides for these encounters,” says Daniël Kriel, CEO of Sanlam Private Wealth.
Similar to Sanlam Private Wealth UK, which is owned by Sanlam, the Saracens Rugby Club has rich South African roots. It has been 50% owned by Remgro since 2008 and has featured many current and previous generation Springboks, including Brendan Venter, John Smit and Francois Pienaar.
According to Kriel, the sponsorship forms part of a broader campaign to increase brand exposure, raise brand awareness and provide opportunities to attract clients through a targeted strategy specifically for Sanlam Private Wealth UK operations. Sanlam Private Wealth UK currently manages £2.3 billion (June 2014) for its UK clients, operating from offices in Bath, Harrogate, Kirkby Lonsdale, London, Marlow, Newcastle, Sevenoaks and Teeside.
“Our sponsorship of Saracens is further aiding us in accessing the UK market, but also in gaining access to a niche market of wealthy South Africans living in London, as well as their colleagues and friends,” he says.
Says Nigel Wray, chairman of the Saracens Rugby Club: “We are looking forward to welcoming these two premier South African provincial sides to Allianz Park. The clashes will be highly competitive – it’s north vs. south, it’s Premiership vs. Currie Cup, and it’s European Champions Cup vs. the Super XV.”
Saracens will play Western Province on Sunday 9 November 2014, and the Blue Bulls on Saturday 31 January 2015.
