Sanlam is pleased to announce the launch of its new Art Lounge in Johannesburg. Based in its new Alice Lane offices in Sandton, it will be the first corporate art gallery in the Sandton central business district to open its doors to the public. “Whether you are on formal business at Sanlam or a just visiting to admire good art, everyone is welcome,” says Stefan Hundt, head of Sanlam Private Wealth’s Art Advisory Service and curator of the Sanlam Art Collection.
The Sanlam Art Lounge will showcase works from emerging artists, commemorate iconic pieces from the renowned Sanlam Art collection and, on occasion, host exhibitions compiled in collaboration with other institutions.
“What better way to celebrate the opening of the new Sanlam Art Lounge than with the exhibition of the 2015 Sanlam Portrait Award Top 40 Artworks,” says Hundt. Gallery doors will open on 2 December 2015 showcasing 39 of the top entries to the Sanlam Portrait Award adjudicated in August this year. The R 100 000 prize-winning portrait, “After the Match” by artist John Pace, will complete the top 40.
Following the Johannesburg exhibition, the Top 40 portraits, under the auspices of the Sanlam Art Collection, will tour to various museums and galleries throughout South Africa. The next stop for the exhibition will be in Durban at the Kwa Zulu Natal Society of Art in February 2016.
