Parag Khanna

Leading geo-strategic expert and best-selling author

Parag Khanna is the leading next-generation voice on the future of global affairs. Named one of Esquire magazine's 75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century and at the top of Wired magazine's Smart List, Khanna is a columnist for CNN, contributing reportage from around the world, and a frequent guest host of CNBC, providing expert commentary on global economic trends and emerging markets.

He is currently a senior fellow at the New America Foundation, the country's most innovative think tank, where he directs the Roundtable on the Future of the World Economy and advises the US National Intelligence Council's Global Trends program. He is also a Senior Fellow of the European Council on Foreign Relations in London and the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, and an adjunct professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. He co-directs the Hybrid Reality Institute, a global research and advisory firm providing insight into the implications of emerging technologies. In 2007, he served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a senior geopolitical advisor to U.S. Special Operations Forces, and was a foreign policy advisor to the Barack Obama presidential campaign.

Khanna is the author of the international bestseller ‘The Second World: How Emerging Powers Are Redefining Global Competition in the 21st Century’ (2009), which has been translated into 15 languages. In ‘How to Run the World: Charting a Course to the Next Renaissance’ (2011), Khanna provides a bold yet viable roadmap to establishing a more resilient world order, one that incorporates governments, cities, corporations, and civic communities into a dynamic diplomatic system.

With his base in Singapore, Khanna travels widely (he’s visited more than 100 countries) and he speaks English, German, French, Spanish, Hindi, and basic Arabic.

A graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, Khanna also attained a Master's from Georgetown's Security Studies Program and a PhD at the London School of Economics. Dr. Khanna has lectured widely at prominent universities around the world. He serves on the board of directors of Independent Diplomat and the New Cities Foundation, and the innovation advisory board of DBS Bank.

Dr Frans Cronje

Scenario planner and CEO of SAIRR

Frans Cronje was educated at St John’s College in Houghton and at the University of the Witwatersrand. He also holds a PhD in scenario planning from North West University. He served with the South African police, worked as a horse-riding instructor and later logger in the United States, and completed a year-long expedition that crossed the African continent from Cape Town to Cairo.

He joined the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) in 2004 and established its Centre for Risk Analysis, which specialises in using scenarios to help business and government leaders make decisions about investment and policy in South Africa. He has presented scenarios to over 100 South African corporations and foreign investors. He is an associate of the Centre for Innovative Leadership, a leading South Africa based scenario consultancy and the author of ‘A Time Traveller’s Guide To Our Next Ten Years’ (Tafelberg 2014). His work has been widely cited in the media from the Volksblad to the Wall Street Journal. He writes columns for Rapport newspaper and Moneyweb and is a regular contributor to Classic Business on Classic FM.

The IRR was established in 1929 and stands for economic and political liberalism. The IRR uses research and public commentary to influence policy in South Africa that promotes investment led economic growth. The IRR is home to a research team that tracks trends for all major policy areas in South Africa and publishes extensively on these. It is the largest independent supplier of information and research support services to politicians, journalists, and civil society groups in South Africa.

Trevor Manuel

Deputy Chairman of Rothschild South Africa

Trevor Manuel is a senior advisor to the Rothschild Group worldwide and Deputy Chairman of Rothschild in South Africa.

Trevor Manuel served as a Cabinet Minister from 1994 to 2014 under the first four successive Presidents, Mandela, Mbeki, Motlanthe and Zuma in democratic South Africa. His cabinet responsibilities included Trade and Industry (May 1994 to April 1996), Finance (April 1996 to May 2009), and in the Presidency he was responsible for the National Planning Commission (May 2009 to May 2014). During his two decades as a Cabinet Minister he also served as a Member of Parliament, representing the African National Congress.

His ministerial career highlights have tracked two decades of major development in the South African economy. As Minister of Trade and Industry he led the process of reintegration of South Africa into the global economy after decades of sanctions, and he introduced extension support measures for small, medium and micro-enterprises. During his lengthy tenure as Minister of Finance he stabilised the macro-economy, significantly transformed the fiscal system in respect of taxation, expenditure and the intergovernmental system. As Chairperson of the National Planning Commission he oversaw the drafting of the broadly accepted first-ever National Development Plan for the country.

As Minister he assumed a number of ex-officio positions on international bodies, including the United Nations Commission for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Bank, the IMF, the G20, the African Development Bank and the Southern African Development Community. In these institutions, he was also frequently elected by his peers to chair several of these bodies.

Mr Manuel has received a number of awards and presentations, including Africa's Finance Minister of the Year and the Woodrow Wilson Public Service Award. He has seven honorary doctorates from South African tertiary institutions and a Doctor of Laws from MacMaster University, Ontario Canada. He has served as the Chancellor of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) since May 2008.

He has a National Diploma in Civil and Structural Engineering from the Peninsula Technikon and completed the Executive Management Programme in a joint programme between Stanford University and the National University of Singapore.

David Burns

Executive Director, NMG Group

David Burns is an Executive Director of the NMG Group, a financial services advisory and intermediary business which employs more than 500 people across Europe, South Africa and Asia Pacific. He has dedicated his career to the financial services sector where he has worked with providers, bancassurers and as a consultant.

He is co-founder of NMG’s UK consulting practice business which provides strategic advice to financial institutions, particularly in the retail life, pensions and investment sectors. Prior to joining NMG he spent five years leading consulting engagements in SE Asia, Australia, South Africa and the USA.

Most recently, David has been closely involved with the UK Retail Distribution Review with a particular focus on the impact of the RDR on the adviser. He has led NMG’s work in this area which includes regularly advising the UK regulator and the Financial Conduct Authority since the introduction of RDR in 2007. His work with the regulator includes quantifying the impact of RDR on advisers, understanding consumers’ propensity to pay explicit advice fees, and developing future-facing scenarios for both the advice and non-advised markets.

Dawie de Villiers

CEO: SEB

Dawie de Villiers has been the chief executive officer of Sanlam Employee Benefits (SEB) since 2013, leading the team that were responsible for negotiating the deal that led to the biggest insurance policy ever written in the history of South Africa. As CEO, he sets the vision, drives sustainable growth and is responsible for achieving the bottom line goals of this business unit with an annual revenue of more than R4 billion.

Dawie has been with Sanlam since 1993 and has managed various Sanlam business units, broadening his business acumen, while gaining an in-depth knowledge of the technicalities and markets served by each of these units. These roles include CEO of Sanlam Structured Solutions, head of Derivative Structuring, business development manager of Sanlam Investment Management and actuarial valuations manager.

By rotating roles across Sanlam, Dawie has cemented relationships with several stakeholders of the business, such as pension fund trustees, employers, chief actuaries and other life insurance businesses. He presents regularly at industry conferences and hosts the SEB Benchmark Symposium, SA’s foremost retirement industry event. Dawie is also a familiar face on business-related TV channels. Dawie obtained his BSc Degree from the University of Stellenbosch. He is a qualified, experienced actuary, and a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. More recently, he completed the prestigious Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

Rob Southey

Head of the Asset Consulting at Alexander Forbes

Rob started his career with Alexander Forbes Asset Consultants in October 1997 and advised clients on investment matters until 2006 when he moved into the Alexander Forbes Special Projects team. Here he was involved in an innovation and research where he remained for a further 2 years before moving to Liberty Corporate as Head of Corporate Distribution. Rob returned to Alexander Forbes in 2010 as head of the Asset Consultants business where he continues to fill an advisory and business management function.

Rob completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Natal as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Management at Wits Business School. He also holds a Diploma in Financial Markets and Instruments from the Academy of Financial Markets, as well as an MBA from Wits Business School.

Anton Gildenhuys

CE: Actuarial, Sanlam Personal Finance

As chief actuary and Group risk officer, Anton Gildenhuys is responsible for the actuarial function of Sanlam. Anton was a Sanlam bursary student and joined Sanlam in January 1997.

He was subsequently appointed to the positions of valuations actuary, development actuary, head of product development and chief executive of SPF Strategic Business Development, a business unit in the Sanlam Group focusing on the SA retail market.

On 1 July this year Anton was further promoted to the role of chief actuary for Sanlam Group. Anton is married with three children, and in his spare time he thoroughly enjoys wildlife and the outdoors.

Olano Makhubela

Chief Director for Financial Investments and Savings at National Treasury

Olano Makhubela is the Chief Director of Financial Investments and Savings at the National Treasury where he has held a position since 2000. In his current role, he is responsible for policy on pensions, insurance, investment funds and financial integrity. During his 14 year career with the National Treasury he has worked on prudential regulation, exchange control policy, capital flows, first tier banking and financial inclusion. He has represented the National Treasury at the G20 Financial Access Working Group, Financial Sector Charter and Nedlac processes.

Olano holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, a BCom Honours (Economics) (distinction) from the University of South Africa, and a Masters in Science in Development Economics from the University of London.

Philip Leon Campher

CEO: ASISA

After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch, Leon joined Old Mutual in the Investment division in 1973. During the thirteen years with Old Mutual he was an investment analyst and portfolio manager. In 1985 he left Old Mutual to form Syfrets Managed Assets where he was portfolio manager and CEO.

In 1993 Leon left Syfrets and to found Coronation where he was CEO of Coronation Fund Managers and executive director of Coronation Holdings. During his time with Coronation he was one of the founders of African Harvest and served as a director of African Harvest. In 2002 Leon retired due to ill health. In 2003 Leon Campher was instrumental in the formation of the Investment Management Association South Africa (IMASA) where he served as CEO until 2008.

In 2008 he was instrumental in the formation of the Association for Savings and Investment South Africa (ASISA) and was appointed CEO on 1 October 2008. Leon currently holds directorships for the following institutions: ASISA, ASISA Academy, International Investment Fund Association, Sun International, Brimstone, Equities Property Fund Limited, JSE Clear (SAFCOM) and STRATE.

Patrice Rassou

Head of Equities, Sanlam Investment Management

Patrice Rassou was appointed Head of Equities, Sanlam Investments (SI) in 2011, having previously held the position of Senior Portfolio Manager at the asset manager. He also manages the SIM General Equity & SIM Top Choice Unit trust as well as specialist financial mandates and SIM equity house view and is responsible for equity selection for the SIM Low Equity Unit Trust. Rassou is also one of South Africa’s leading banking sector analysts and is a regular and sought after media commenter.

Rassou completed his BSc (Econ) degree in Monetary Economics with first class honours from the London School of Economics. In 1992 he completed his MSc (Econ) after winning a scholarship from the London School of Economics. He started working at PricewaterhouseCoopers in London and passed his qualifying examination for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales in 1994 on the first attempt. He completed his MBA at Manchester Business School in 2003 with distinction. Patrice also completed an executive leadership programme at GIBS in 2014. Patrice also served on the Board of ABSIP Western Cape Chapter.

Jan Jonathan Durand

CEO: Remgro

Jannie Durand studied at the University of Stellenbosch and after obtaining his B. Accountancy degree in 1989 and B. Accountancy (Hons) degree in 1990, he obtained his M.Phil (Management Studies) degree from Oxford in 1992. He qualified as a chartered accountant, CA(SA), in 1995.

He joined the Rembrandt Group in 1996 and became the financial director of VenFin Ltd in 2000, where he was to take the helm as CEO in May 2006. He was appointed chief investment officer of Remgro Ltd in November 2009, and has been the CEO of Remgro Ltd since 7 May 2012.

Paul Anthony Dunne

CEO: Northam Platinum

Paul Dunne (BSc; MBA) is the chief executive officer of Northam Platinum Limited. He joined Northam with effect from 1 March 2014 after a career spanning 26 years in the mining sector, the bulk of which were spent at Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats) in a number of operational roles.

In 2001 he was appointed as executive in charge of processing activities for Implats. In 2009 he assumed responsibility for all mining, concentrating and smelting operations at Implats’ Rustenburg and Marula mines and in 2010 he was appointed an executive director, with similar responsibilities.

Stephen Koseff

CEO: Investec

Stephen Koseff is Chief Executive Officer of the Investec Group which is dual listed on both the London Stock Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Stephen has held the position of CEO since 1996 and has been with the company for 35 years in total, filling a number of roles during this time.

In addition to his directorships of Investec Ltd and Investec plc and various other Investec subsidiaries, he is non-executive director of the South African Banking Association. He is former Chairman of the South African Banking Association, former non-executive director of The Bidvest Group Limited and former director of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

He is a former member of the Financial Markets Advisory Board and former Chairman of the Independent Bankers Association.

Stephen is the recipient of numerous awards, including Moneyweb CEO of the Year (2003), GIBS Social Entrepreneurship award “benefactor category” (2006), Sunday Times Lifetime Achievers Award (2009), and the Southern Africa Master Entrepreneur Winner at the EY World Entrepreneur Awards (2014).

Stephen is a qualified Chartered Accountant and holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration and a Higher Diploma in Business Data Processing.

Maya Fisher-French

Financial journalist and author

Maya Fisher-French is a well-known South African financial journalist with her own website MayaonMoney.co.za.

She is editor of My Money My Lifestyle, the personal finance section of national Sunday newspaper City Press for which she recently won the 2013 Sanlam Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism under the category of Consumer Financial Education.

Maya edited the South African version of Dave Ramsey’s best seller ‘The Total Money Makeover’ and has published her own book on money matters, ‘Maya on Money’.

Apart from print media Maya hosted the JSE crossing for CNBC African and is a frequent guest on talk-radio shows. She is also a popular speaker at corporate events.

Prior to becoming a financial journalist in 2003, Maya worked in the financial industry for a stock broking company where she developed their private client trading desk and headed up the offshore investment division. Before that she worked for Investec Private Bank as a consultant on their direct investment desk.

Maya has a Bachelor of Arts in English and an Honours degree in Economics from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2006 she received the award for Best Newcomer in the Sanlam Journalist of the Year awards for articles published in business magazine Maverick.
